The 2020 Ford Explorer has been completely redesigned for the model year. Fans of this three-row midsize SUV will be pleased by all the returning features that make this model a preferred choice. And those who aren’t as familiar with prior versions of this popular SUV will appreciate all the appealing aspects of this refreshed model.
To start, the trim level lineup is slightly different for 2020 with all-new trims. It now includes the Ford Explorer base, Ford Explorer XLT, Ford Explorer Limited, Ford Explorer ST, and Ford Explorer Platinum. The lower three models now come standard with a turbocharged 2.3-liter, four-cylinder engine that is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and puts out 300 horsepower. Unlike the 2019 model, rear-wheel drive is now the standard drivetrain and when properly equipped, offers up to 5,600 pounds of towing capacity. You can also opt for all-wheel drive.
In the two upper models, a 3.0-liter V6 engine comes standard. It’s slightly more powerful at the sporty new Ford Explorer ST trim, putting out 400 horsepower versus 365 horsepower in the Ford Explorer Platinum. On top of it all, there’s now a Ford Explorer Limited Hybrid version available that runs on a 3.3-liter hybrid powertrain and offers the most impressive towing capacity in its class — 5,000 pounds.
Standard tech features include 4G LTE Wi-FI, Android Auto™, and Apple Carplay® connectivity. Rear privacy glass, dual-zone automatic climate control, and an available 50/50 split-folding and power-operated third-row seat add an extra level of convenience and comfort. Plus, each model is available with the Ford Co-Pilot360™ suite of advanced driver aids like blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning.
